Anjelica Lindsey’s new single, Cherokee Gothic for Pipe Organ, is out now on all major streaming platforms through Unknown Tone Records YIELD Recordings Collection, Telling Oklahoma Story through Sound.

The new recording features organist Abraham Ross, D.Mus., performing Lindsey’s composition at Saint James Anglican Church in Vancouver, British Columbia. The single is available to stream and listen to now.

Piece Description

The title Cherokee Gothic comes from an architectural term coined by Frank Lloyd Wright when describing the style of buildings at the University of Oklahoma during an in-person visit to the campus. Wright used the phrase casually to capture the blend of Gothic revival with local adaptations, a uniquely Oklahoman vernacular that layered cultural collisions into architectural form. This composition, however, opens with a neo-gothic interpretation of Amazing Grace, a song known to have been sung by the Cherokee people during their forced removal journey on the Trail of Tears. Both architectural and ancestral, this concept provides a powerful metaphor for the musical architecture of the composition: a work that reclaims and reinterprets a label historically applied by non-Indigenous observers, transforming it through the self-identification and authorship of a Cherokee woman composer.
