Oklahoma Woman Quartet is a song cycle for voice and string quartet by Cherokee composer Anjelica Lindsey. At a time when much Western classical music depicting Indigenous subjects emerged from the Indianist movement, comparatively little has been authored by Indigenous composers themselves, and fewer still by Indigenous women. Conceived, composed, orchestrated, notated, and written entirely by Lindsey, the work offers a distinctly feminine Cherokee perspective expressed through the language of contemporary classical music.
Across eleven interconnected songs, Oklahoma Woman Quartet establishes the Oklahoma Woman as a recurring American archetype, one whose journey through work, faith, mortality, and transcendence reflects both personal experience and larger cultural questions. The cycle reflects on life in Oklahoma's Bible Belt, where religion is often presented as solace amid the demands of modern life, while questioning the distance between inherited belief and lived experience. Songs such as I Write So Thunderous confront hypocrisy, while Am I A Madman? explores the disorienting experience of discovering profound spirituality in nature only to have those experiences dismissed by others. Later movements turn toward displacement, grief, and death before concluding with Remote View, an introspective meditation that quietly suggests the spiritual continuity the narrator had sensed all along.
Rather than drawing upon romanticized images of Indigenous identity, Lindsey writes from lived experience. Her music stands within the traditions of Western chamber music while speaking in an unmistakably contemporary voice shaped by a distinctly American inheritance. Like many Cherokee families, her own history reflects generations of adaptation and intermarriage, offering a contemporary Cherokee perspective rooted in lived experience rather than historical idealization.
Oklahoma Woman Quartet expands the presence of Indigenous authorship in classical music, contributing a rare and fully realized artistic statement created from the perspective of a Cherokee woman and staking a lasting place for that perspective within the evolving history of the concert tradition.
