American Classical Voices highlights the work and lived experiences of Indigenous classical musicians and offers listeners the rare chance to hear new music by living composers, including many radio premieres. Lindsey joined Yazzie for a conversation about her creative process, current projects, and the growing presence of Native voices within contemporary classical music. Selections from Lindsey’s recent works will be featured throughout the broadcast, giving audiences an intimate introduction to her evolving body of work.
Over the course of its run, American Classical Voices has featured an extraordinary range of Indigenous classical musicians whose work is shaping the future of the field. Musicologist, pianist and host of American Classical Voices, Renata Yazzie
Renata Yazzie, Tó’aheedlíinii born for Kinyaa’áanii, is a Diné (Navajo) pianist and musicologist currently based in New York City. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and a master’s degree in Music with dual concentrations in Musicology and Piano Performance from the University of New Mexico. Her research interests span across genres within Indigenous music and also cross into linguistic, neurochemical, and theological inquiry. Her writings can be found in academic journals and literature, Native Max Magazine, Source New Mexico, and more. Yazzie is also the founder of the American Indian Musicians’ Scholarship which seeks to provide well-rounded support to American Indian students pursuing a post-secondary degree in Music.
